Applications are invited for the post of Lord Trent Professor of Pharmacy based in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Policy. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the best schools of pharmacy in the world (6th in 2016 QS World Rankings) to lead and shape strategic developments at Divisional, School, Faculty and University level.

Purpose of the Role:

This role is based in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Policy. Roles at this level will have a significant impact on the direction, strategy, objectives and results of the School, Faculty and University. The role holder will provide internationally recognised research leadership and activity in an area related to pharmacy practice and policy which leads to high quality publications and outputs, significant grant capture and demonstrable impact on practice and policy. The role can include teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the UK, Malaysia, China and other international partners, adhering to agreed quality frameworks. The role holder will be expected to undertake significant leadership and management responsibilities at School, Faculty or University level to ensure the delivery of strategic plans and inspire and support colleagues to achieve their potential.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to planning and leading the development and implementation of research strategy within the Pharmacy Practice and Policy division. Develop and communicate a clear vision of the Division’s strategic direction and ensure the delivery of School, Faculty and University strategic plans.
  • Generate significant income by developing and winning support for innovative research proposals and funding bids. Through internationally-recognised original research, maintain and further develop an international reputation as a leader in an area related to pharmacy policy and practice.
  • Lead and develop internal and external networks to foster collaboration, share information and ideas and promote the subject and the University. Organise high-profile research events to promote the work of the Division and School and further disseminate and explain research findings.
  • Lead and support funding bids that build research support for the specialist area and advance the reputation of the Division, School and the University.
  • Deliver teaching, provide academic and pastoral advice and undertake assessments at all levels of study. Gain funding for, supervise and examine postgraduate research students both internally and externally. 
  • Contribute to and lead the development of programmes of study in the UK, China, Malaysia and other international partners, demonstrating innovative approaches to learning within an agreed quality framework and meeting the educational standards of professional bodies, e.g. GPhC. Disseminate best practise in teaching and learning methodologies within and outside the School and University.
  • Provide leadership and management through undertaking School or Faculty roles including acting as Head of the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Policy for fixed periods. Provide intellectual leadership to the Division, providing direction and mentoring for less experienced colleagues. Appoint, manage and develop individuals and/or teams to deliver strategic plans and achieve their potential. Foster inter-disciplinary team working to develop team spirit and team coherence. Seek to resolve staff and student issues drawing on specialist advice and support as required.
  • Be responsible for the safe conduct of work within work area and teaching responsibilities ensuring that the School's arrangements for compliance with University Safety Policy are implemented.
  • Contribute to the running and strategic direction of the University through designated committees or project activities. Participate in University decision making and governance and contribute to the development of academic policies.
  • Participate in national and international bodies; act as an advisor to government and in any other external advisory capacity. Where appropriate contribute to the development of higher education processes in the UK.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD, or equivalent in a relevant area. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex and conceptual ideas. 
  • In-depth, specialist knowledge of an area relevant to pharmacy practice and policy to enable the development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding in the field. 
  • High level analytical capability to facilitate conceptual thinking, innovation and creativity. 
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, develop and manage the performance of a team. 
  • Track record of building relationships and collaborating with others, internally and externally in teaching and/or research. 
  • Ability to travel within the UK and overseas. 
  • Extensive and high level research and teaching experience in an area relevant to 
  • Extensive experience in leading the design of research techniques and methods.
  • Proven, extensive ability to plan and lead the delivery of research to develop sources of funding.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in leading a team to deliver teaching within an agreed quality framework.
  • Significant record of successful supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Extensive experience and capability to act as a role model in the areas of research, teaching, and management.
  • Previous experience and success in raising capital in support of new business projects, management of grants and contracts. 
  • Previous success in transferring research results to commercial professional or other practical use.
